We
are delighted by the music taken from Flavio's native land in his
first solo album. Mara is a title related not only to his daughter
but also to the sea (Sp. mar),
the mountain and it is the vey ancient link with the rural atmosphere
in Asturias. Nature
and the rural way of life that his own countrymen have burst into
the urban area of the Asturian pipers in the eighties, the desire
to rediscover Asturian traditions results in music for the XXI century. The
most traditional pipe music (Les Mudances, Salton) and
the new pieces written by the artist (Aguiar
203, Valdeflora, Mara)
are mingled in the twelve themes put together in this debut solo album.
He pays homage to his pupils in the Asturian Centre in Buenos Aires
and to the emigration of the Asturian people to America in 100
Años nel ríu La Plata. Some
of Asturias' finest folk musicians have helped Flavio make this record.
Igor Medio, musical producer of this work (Bouzoki de Felpeyu), Ara
Costas (Voice), Salva López (keyboard), Lisardo Prieto (fiddle), Castor
Castro (flute), Daniel Lombas (percussion), and the collaboration
of Javier Tejedor (accordion) in Rumba
d'Ibias, Fonsu Fernández (Zanfona) in Xotes
de L.laciana, and Fonduveiga and Pablo Pumarada (Djembé) in Rumba
d'Ibias as well. <<
I had the pleasure to listen to this record and, attracted by the
outstanding sensibility and remarkable tecnique that Flavio Benito shows in the management
of our beloved asturian instrument, I cannot but sincerely
congratulate him for the enthusiasm and fondness showed by this lad
who belongs to our fabulous second generation of pipers, able
to compose and arrange the traditional melodic scores. Joaquín Manzanares Rodríguez-Mir (Chronicler of Asturies). 14 / may / 2002.
